Description

There are so many striking objects in the star forming region around M78 nebula, that I decided to create this picture featuring some of the most interesting objects shot with FSQ106 along with the same images taken by some of the biggest telescopes on Earth.

Herbig-Haro 24

HH 24 is definitely one of the most spectacular HH objects known. This is a small cluster of forming stars and contains at least six jets. This object is definitely worth looking at it in detail. Some more info and hi-res pictures you can find here:

McNeil's Nebula

This nebula was discovered by an amateur astronomer Julian McNeil using 3 inch (!!!) scope in January 2004. It wasn't seen in the images taken in 2003, but later studies showed that this isn't the first appearance of this nebula - it was visible also on images taken in 1966. The nebula was created by the outburst from the fetal star IRAS 05436-0007 (type FU Orionis), visible at the top of the nebula in the pictures above. I think this is one of the most strong proofs that you don’t need to have an extremely fancy equipment to make a discovery in astronomy and also reminds that every astro image is a bit more than just a picture - in some way it is a piece of scientific data.
